The real problem

There's a gap between what you know and what you can make. Here's why.

That's not a motivation problem. It's a structure problem. Tutorials teach you isolated tricks — a transition here, a color grade there. But nobody shows you the complete picture: how to see a scene, move through it, tell a story with it, and edit it into something you're proud of.

Every month you spend watching tutorials instead of building real skills is a month where the gap between what you know and what you can make gets wider. The footage you're shooting today could be dramatically better — but only if someone shows you what you're missing.

This isn't a gear problem or a talent problem. It's a training problem — and training is solvable.

What real filmmaking training actually covers

Not tricks. Not hacks. A complete system — from how to hold a camera to how to tell a story that makes someone feel something.

Camera Skills
Movement
Storytelling
Directing
Editing
Complete Film

Most training teaches one of these. Unscripted Studio covers all of them — connected, in sequence, taught by someone who's done it professionally for 15 years on six continents.

For the first time

What if you could look over a professional filmmaker's shoulder for 45 days?

That's Unscripted Studio. Every technique, every breakdown, every lesson — from the filmmaker who made award-winning films on six continents with nothing but a backpack. And when you're done, you keep one course forever.

Who's teaching you

Brandon Li

Brandon's work has been featured by BBC, TIME, TedX, and National Geographic. His signature style — fluid, improvised, backpack filmmaking — has earned 13 Vimeo Staff Picks, a Webby Award, and Vimeo's Best of the Year.

And just like you, he makes all of his films using only what he can carry in a backpack. No bulky gear. Just efficient, streamlined, run-and-gun filmmaking.

He's made commercials for BMW, MTV, and Etihad Airways. He teaches the way he shoots — direct, honest, no filler.

He built Unscripted Studio because everything he learned came from doing — not from a classroom or a YouTube tutorial. This is the film school he wished existed when he was starting out.

"I just got signed up and have binged on the first three courses. Excellent!! I had high hopes from seeing your work. That combined with your teaching style and the course structure have definitely surpassed my expectations. I'm closer to the end than the beginning of an engineering career and recall your YouTube 'Boring Room' challenge thinking I'm not wired for this. Now that I see there is method and not simply the luck of an innate creative gene, I'm inspired. Thank-you."
Kenneth G. — Studio Member
"Your basics are great and I can't wait for more material from you. I love the fact that you're a 'direct to the point' type of guy. I always like that in your YouTube videos as all. You're articulate and taking the time to share your mindset and reasonings as you go. That's so valuable. Thank you for this!"
Dave W. — Studio Member
"I am new to the course. I must say that the improvised storytelling lessons are just what I was looking for. They are really going to take my filmmaking to a whole another level. Thank you for creating such an amazing community where we can learn from each other and learn so much from yourself! I am becoming much more confident with filming and starting the weekly challenges! Thank you!!"
Jakub Z. — Studio Member
"All these videos are amazing! I wanted to bring a gimbal to my trip but I am still a beginner in that and I haven't got into the gimbal bootcamps. I feared it is going to be a burden to me since I am not exactly good in it yet. These handheld moves are definitely a lifesaver in this case. They might not be as stable as a gimbal but at least I have more control at the moment. Am looking forward to trying out those moves in my upcoming trip and continue with the other bootcamps afterward. Like you always emphasised – Practice, practice and practice! Thank you Brandon! Loving all your lessons so far."

A Day in Chiang Mai — Complete Film Project

16 lessons · 3 hours 1 min · Complete shooting + editing project

Watch me plan and execute a 5-day shoot. Waterfalls, moving vehicles, live animals, a crowded cultural festival. See how I make mistakes and improvise my way out of them — the most important skill of all. This is not sugar-coated theoretical filmmaking in a controlled environment.

Questions

Frequently asked

Not sure which course is right for you?
That's the whole point. Instead of guessing which course to buy, you get 45 days to explore all of them. Watch as much as you want, go as deep as you want, try things you wouldn't have considered. By the end, you won't be guessing — you'll know exactly which course matters most to you. And that's the one you keep forever.
What do I actually get for $45?
Immediate, full access to every course in Unscripted Studio — 300+ video lessons, over 26 hours of content, plus downloadable practice footage and editing files. Several of these courses have never been available separately at any price. Unscripted Storytelling alone sells for $295. The Gimbal Masterclass is $147. The iPhone Filmmaker is $95. Fusion Filmmaking is $147. For $45, you get all of them — and at the end, you choose one to keep for life.
How does "keep one course forever" work?
Before your access window ends, you'll receive an email with a link to choose which course you'd like to keep. Pick any course in Unscripted Studio — it's yours for lifetime access, even after your window closes. Some of these courses sell individually for $147 to $295, so depending on what you choose, you could be getting lifetime access to a course worth six times what you paid.
What happens when my access period ends?
Your access to all courses ends — except the one you chose to keep. That one is yours forever. You're never billed automatically for anything. Before your window closes, you'll have the option to extend your access to everything for $20 per month if you want more time. That's completely optional, and we may not continue that option in the future.
What if I don't have a gimbal or a DJI Pocket 3?
You don't need every piece of gear to get value from every course. The iPhone Filmmaker uses only a phone. Unscripted Storytelling is about narrative thinking — no specific gear required. The Gimbal Masterclass does use a stabilizer, but the principles of camera movement and visual storytelling apply regardless of what you're shooting on. Start with the courses that match the gear you already have, and explore the rest to see how other tools and approaches work.
I use Adobe Premiere — will I be able to follow along?
The editing portions of courses use either Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve, depending on the course. But here's the thing — most of what's taught in Unscripted Studio happens before you sit down to edit. It's about how you see, how you shoot, how you plan, and how you solve problems in the field. The editing lessons show you how Brandon thinks and approaches his footage — the decision-making process behind the cuts, not software shortcuts. That transfers to any editing program, including Premiere.
Is this for complete beginners?
Some courses are. The iPhone Filmmaker and Island Memories (Filmmaking for Photographers) both start from zero — no experience assumed. Unscripted Storytelling is relevant at every level. Other courses like A Day in Chiang Mai and the Gimbal Masterclass are more advanced and assume you already know the basics of your camera. That's part of why the 45-day access is valuable — you can start where you are and see what's ahead.
What if I can't finish everything in 45 days?
You're not supposed to. The 45 days are for exploring, not completing. Go deep on the courses that pull you in, sample the rest, and choose the one you want to keep. That said, some members have dedicated a full month to learning and filming every day — and their results were incredible. We'll share some of that work with you once you're inside. If you want more time with everything, you can extend your access or upgrade to lifetime access to everything for $165.
Do I get instant access?
Yes. The moment your purchase goes through, you have full access to every course, every lesson, and every downloadable resource in Unscripted Studio. Nothing is dripped or locked. Island Memories even includes downloadable video clips used in the film so you can follow along in the editing process step by step.
Will this offer be available later?
We're able to offer this price because we recently moved to a new platform that dramatically reduced our hosting and delivery costs. This is a test. If it works and the quality of the community stays high, we'll keep it going. If not, we'll raise the price or pull it. At $45 for everything in Unscripted Studio plus a course you keep forever, this is the lowest we've ever offered — and we don't know how long it stays this way.
The offer

If you've read this far, you already know whether this is right for you. Trust that instinct. For $45, you get to test everything — and if even one course changes the way you see filmmaking, it will have been worth a hundred times the price.
